Beyond the Barbell Inc.

Lifting the Stigma of Mental Health

Mission

Beyond the Barbell aims to create safe, welcoming and enjoyable spaces where people can work out and benefit physically, psychologically and socially from a support network of like-minded people.

Vision

To increase the number of people committed to achieving good mental health.

Values

Beyond the Barbell’s values include:

Respect – Everyone has their own story to tell and we listen with respect and empathy.

Brave – We encourage our members to be courageous in sharing their experiences and beliefs.

TrustWe provide a supportive setting where members can share confidences without being criticised or hurt.

Inclusivity – Everyone is welcome irrespective of their background.

Vulnerability – We support members with their vulnerability so they can connect with the experiences that bring purpose and worth to their lives, and to have more meaningful relationships with others.

 Background

Beyond the Barbell was inspired by research conducted by Michael Murphy at Victoria University. The study focused on CrossFit Box members and found that their primary motivation for joining was the sense of community. For Michael, the gym provided not only physical exercise but also a support system, friendship, and camaraderie. Beyond the Barbell aims to create a mental health support group where individuals can meet, work out, and engage in conversations, fostering a sense of belonging and improving overall well-being.

Please note: Beyond the Barbell is not a professional counselling or mental health service.  If you are struggling with mental health issues you should contact your GP for advice and if urgent contact Lifeline 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636.
